The Diet and Workout Paradox

November 19, 2008 – 3:59 pm

For years, centuries even, the idea of dieting and working out has been apart of millions of peoples lives. Am I overweight? Am I too skinny? How do I lose this pesky stomach fat? have all been questions that the masses have desired answers to. With all of the different get in shape fast schemes people have fallen into a virtual gain-loss-gain weight paradox. Society has been content with accepting these fads and even pay millions of dollars each year to get the latest “loose 15 pounds in 15 days” diet from a so called expert. The so called expert Dr. Robert Atkins, whose diet has swept the country like a plague over the past five years, believe it or not died of a heart attack related to the diet that he so staunchly preached. When will someone stand up and demand that these pirates of the health and fitness industry be held accountable for what they are doing? How many more people will fall victim to these ridiculous diet and workouts shenanigans before something is done.

One would think that our government would step in and help regulate an industry of “backward ally dealers” and “sell their soul for a dollar” secret hand shakers. Well in a perfect world wishful thinking would prevail, but such is evidently not the case. Each year the government has cut food subsidies to public schools decreasing the overall quality and healthiness of government lunch programs. In a nationwide assessment, USDA found that the average lunch served in 1998-1999 met its dietary guidelines of fewer than 30% of total calories from fat and less than 10% from saturated fat in only one out of seven secondary schools (USDA, FNS 2001). With more then 30 % of children aged 6-19 being obese these findings were absolutely appalling and yet still, the government has done nothing.

When the nation is in a crisis or epic proportions, our government has failed us, and virtually every option has been exhausted what is the general population to do? The answer and saving grace has come in the form of online, user driven, health and fitness communities. Sites like emuscle.com and sparkpeople.com have understood the desperate need for information and content in the form of free diets, free workouts, and free articles that are unequivocally and irrecoverably free from the dirty right hand of the “mainstream” health and fitness industry. The sites have promoted the sharing of credible health and fitness ideas through a common medium; the will to be fit and healthy, and to see those around them do the same. In a time when our country is looked at as the gluttons of the world, it is a fresh breath of air to know that there are places for the common people to go to seek credible health and fitness advice. The old saying goes, “Our body is our temple”, well lets start taking better care of our temples!

eMuscle Looks to Carve a New Niche in the Interactive Online Community

November 11, 2008 – 12:40 pm

Over the past five years North America has witnessed a huge boom in online interactive websites. These days it is difficult to find someone who is not apart of, or is at least familiar with, such sites as facebook.com and myspace.com. According to eMuscle founder Thomas Wick, the interactive online communities have, in the past, primarily been used for simple enjoyment and ancillary purposes. It is time an interactive online website came along that helped the individual person improve their lifestyle.

eMuscle (www.emuscle.com) is an online training website, which harnesses the wisdom of the crowd, and pioneers a new way for people to build better bodies. The online community, designed for anyone who is trying to improve their life, allows users to share diets, workouts, thoughts, opinions, videos, pictures and more; creating a unique training experience. By aggregating the knowledge and insights of its members, eMuscle.com can better help individual members, groups or teams reach their goals. This new and improved approach is integrated with innovative tracking tools, videos, and insights from experts that make training easier. It’s great for athletes, trainers and nutritionists because it provides the means to make additional money and a means to additionally self-promote.

Unlike many of the current muscle and bodybuilding sites that are available, eMuscle.com will provide a practical fitness and health website for the practical person. Contrary to what some sites may believe, a petite middle aged women is going to have a hard time relating to a young male bodybuilder. eMuscle.com encourages trainers, athletes, and the average person to express, interact, and learn about health fitness at their own pace and in their own interest categories. By allowing the average user to interact with others with the same common health and fitness interests, a unique one-of-a-kind social network will be created that anyone can be a part of.

Similar to the way Facebook.com and Myspace.com have revolutionized the way people from domestic and foreign networks can interact, eMuscle.com will provide very similar networks through high schools, colleges, teams, areas, and gyms. A social revolution was started with the development of online social networks; eMuscle.com has simply taken the ideas and successes of such websites and tailored the content to the health and fitness industry.

Two-pronged attack makes protection essential

November 4, 2008 – 1:52 pm

For the first time in over 15 years, UK consumers are being forced to deal with both falling house prices and widespread job losses and the latest jump in repossessions shows just how difficult many are finding it to maintain their status quo.

According to Sara-Ann Burgess, director at payment protection insurance specialist Burgesses, it is not since the early nineties that a faltering labor market has combined with a plummeting housing market to create an impossible situation for many borrowers.

“Since negotiating the problems of the early nineties, there have always been either good employment prospects or rising house prices to help borrowers deal with any problems they faced. Now both crutches been taken away a huge amount of ordinary people are going to struggle.”

Should redundancy force borrowers to sell up, falling house prices may leave them in a position of negative equity, giving them nowhere to turn. Equally those who have been used to withdrawing equity from their property and taking advantage of low interest rates are finding there is no more capital left to squeeze out of their property.

Burgess commented: “The latest figures from the FSA show that repossessions in quarter two of this year were up by 71% on the previous year. People simply have nowhere to go if they get into trouble now that house prices are falling and a growing number of people are being made redundant.”

Burgess urged borrowers to reassess their need for protection insurance in the light of the deteriorating environment.

“I think people now realize they are not as secure as they were in the past but are perhaps wary of what the protection market can offer them. Seeking out independent providers such as British Insurance will help them get low cost, high quality cover that puts a safety net in place for their family.”

In a changing environment, Burgess said it was important borrowers were also prepared to change their own approach to their finances and tailor it to best serve the long terms needs of both themselves and their families.

Old fashioned values will help brokers protect clients

November 4, 2008 – 1:49 pm

Mortgage brokers have been urged to return to old-fashioned broking values in a bid to protect clients, by Sara-Ann Burgess, a high profile payment protection insurance (PPI) campaigner.

The last year has seen mortgage volumes and values collapse in spectacular style and brokers can no longer expect business to walk through their door.

For those brokers that want to remain in the market in the long term and continue to provide a valuable and effective service to clients, Burgess says it will be necessary for many firms to re-evaluate the way they operate and the level of contact they have with clients.

“Many mortgage brokers had got used to business flooding through their door and in the face of such demand, keeping in contact with clients and offering them additional services was not the priority.”

However now the stream of new business is so weak, Burgess said those brokers that were able to mine their existing database of clients and help them adapt to the changing financial environment would be best placed to see out the downturn.

“Unemployment is on the rise and many borrowers who had not considered PPI necessary may well feel differently about putting protection in place. Brokers should be contacting all of the clients they have worked with in recent years and offering them a review of their situation and help with putting protection in place,” said Burgess.

Even for clients that have PPI in place, Burgess said it was likely that many could be paying less for their policy or could secure more flexible and effective cover by changing provider.

Independent Intermediaries like British Insurance have shown the huge difference in price between the cheapest and most expensive policies in the market, but still too many consumers are paying over the odds.

“There is a great opportunity,” claimed Burgess, “For brokers to get in touch with clients, reassess their protection needs and perhaps pick up some remortgage business as well.”

The Little Known Micro-Nutrients That are Critical in the Battle Against Anti Aging

October 31, 2008 – 2:23 pm

Nutritional science is becoming increasingly interested in the potential of certain micro-nutrients, which appear to be of particular significance in the battle against aging. These so-called anti-aging micro-nutrients include lipoic acid, and the amino acid, carnitine.

Both lipoic acid and carnitine are manufactured naturally by the body through the normal metabolism of food, but what is particularly interesting to anti-aging researchers is that the body’s ability to synthesize both these compounds appears to decline significantly with advancing age.

Both lipoic acid and carnitine, the latter in particular, are very important in the complex processes by which food is converted by the body into energy. Lipoic acid is also a significant anti-oxidant, combating the free radicals which are an important cause of the cellular damage which can accelerate the aging process and even contribute to the onset of the degenerative diseases which are the source of so much misery in old age. Lipoic acid is quite quickly removed from blood plasma, which to some extent restricts its value as an anti-oxidant in its own right. However, the fact that lipoic acid is quickly taken up by the body’s cells in this way may well be indicative of its significance for other functions. Moreover, there is now good evidence that supplementation with lipoic acid can help reverse the age-related decline in cell concentrations of vitamin C and glutathione, which are respectively the most important water and fat-soluble anti-oxidants, and consequently critical in the anti-aging battle.

Both lipoic acid and carnitine have also been found to be crucial to the proper functioning of the cell mitochondria, the principal producers of energy within the body. What is particularly relevant in the field of anti-ageing is that the heart is very densely packed with mitochondria; and this vital organ not only consumes enormous amounts of energy, but is unable to store the energy it needs for more than a few minutes. The proper functioning of the heart, and therefore life itself, is very highly dependent on the proper functioning of these mitochondria, which is particularly prone to decline rapidly with age.

The powerful anti-oxidant functions of lipoic acid appear to be extremely important in protecting the cell mitochondria from damage, whilst carnitine works to maintain the delivery of energy to the mitochondria through the metabolism of the essential fatty acids which are the heart’s principal source of energy; a metabolism which otherwise declines significantly with age. But the potential anti-aging benefits of lipoic acid and carnitine do not end with the heart. Lipoic acid, in particular, is now widely used by nutritional therapists in ameliorating the nerve damage and pain caused by diabetes, and there is some evidence that carnitine may also be useful in this regard. Experiments on old animals, including rats and dogs, have suggested that supplementation with lipoic acid and carnitine may also have significant effects in improving brain function, particularly short-term memory, and this is not really surprising given that mitochondrial damage is strongly associated with age-related dementia and conditions such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.

There is evidence that mitochondrial damage in brain cells may be in large part due to increased free radical activity caused by the build up of excess iron, copper, and other minerals occurring naturally within the body. Excitingly, it seem that lipoic acid may actually reverse this build up, returning the levels of these minerals to those found in younger animals. More than this; the capacity of lipoic acid to remove excess metals from the body has led to it being used in the removal of more damaging substances such as lead and mercury; and suggests that the substance may have a more general detoxifying capability, of use even in cases of acute poisoning and alcohol or drug damage.

Finally, it is now widely accepted that many cancers are at root diseases of degeneration, becoming consequently much more prevalent as the population ages; and having their origins in the long-term damage to cells caused by free radical activity. Given this, it is believed that lipoic acid’s anti-oxidant function, and role in stimulating the activity of vitamin and glutathione, may also play an important part in the battle against cancer. Lipoic acid is also known to help activate many of the genes which are vital weapons in this battle. It is conceded even by its advocates that much more research is required, but these are nevertheless exciting findings.

Despite all of this, however, orthodox medicine is characteristically reluctant to endorse the use of supplements of lipoic acid or carnitine, although there appear to be no concerns regarding toxicity with either. Suitable doses appear to be in the range 100mg-300mg of lipoic acid and 500mg-1,000mg of carnitine. But whilst these doses should be sufficient to deliver the general anti-aging benefits in healthy individuals, nutritional therapists and practitioners commonly recommend much higher intakes for the treatment of specific conditions such as diabetes and the promotion of weight loss.

The Co-operative Financial Services launches ‘goodwithmoney’ Social Networking blog

October 7, 2008 – 4:51 pm

The Co-operative Financial Services has launched its very own blog at http://blog.goodwithmoney.co.uk/ . The site has been designed to provide a platform on which to highlight examples of where The Co-operative Financial Services has demonstrated clear ‘ethics in action’ and to provide the public with a chance to post their comment and views on the corporate and socially responsible activity which the organization is involved in.

The first subject to be featured on the site will be The Co-operative Bank’s support for Microfinance*. The Co-operative Bank has created a special £25m fund in order to support the development of small businesses in new and developing countries as well as some of the world’s poorest countries. The Bank has already provided support in 25 countries worldwide including Nicaragua, Azerbaijan, Cambodia, Ecuador, Kenya and Bosnia.

In May of 2008 The Co-operative Bank sent two members of staff to see at first hand the real impact microfinance has had on peoples’ lives by visiting some of the projects it had recently supported in Bosnia.

The visit was of particular significance to one member of staff Belma Gracankic (25), who is herself a Bosnian refugee having come to the UK in 1993 along with her family to escape the war in Sarajevo.

Belma, along with her colleague Sangeeta, recorded a video diary of the visit in which she talks to some of the people in Bosnia who as a result of the microfinance funding have managed to rebuild their lives following the war. Belma also, for the first time since leaving Bosnia, returns to the village (Derventa) where she grew up and talks openly about the hardship she and her family had to go through during the war and describes to what the lengths they had to go to in order to escape the war**.

The ‘goodwithmoney’ blog will host a series of video clips, archive footage, interviews and photographs both via the site, vimeo, flicker and you tube where over the coming weeks those logging on can follow their trip step by step and post their views/comments.

Belma Gracankic, Relationship Manager at the Co-operative Bank, commented, “I take great pride in working for a bank that take its ethical credentials so seriously. I was delighted to return to Bosnia and to see some of my fellow Bosnian’s rebuilding their lives through the help and support of The Co-operative Bank. It was also especially rewarding to re-visit the places I grew up and so see how they are being rebuilt and regenerated. I hope the blog will provide everyone visiting the site a real insight into what life is now like in Bosnia and how it has changed since the siege of Sarajevo.

Sara-Ann concludes: “Over the last week we’ve seen people in despair, wondering how to pay their bills, feed their children and keep a roof over their head when there are no wages coming in. Whilst the redundancy could not have been avoided, the financial hardship that will inevitably follow can.”

Ignorance isn’t bliss with PPI

October 7, 2008 – 4:49 pm

Recent research from price comparison site moneysupermarket reveals that only one in seven Brits consider Payment Protection Insurance (PPI) as crucial and almost a quarter do not know what it is.  “This is extremely concerning,” says PPI lobbyist Sara-Ann Burgess from Burgesses, “PPI is a financial lifeline and could make the difference between keeping and losing your home if you’re made redundant.”

Payment Protection Insurance provides a monthly income, to either pay bills or the mortgage, if the policyholder is unable to work due to accident, sickness or unemployment.  Policies generally pay out for up to a year and some providers give back to day one benefits, health and employment support services and Legal Expenses cover.

Premiums are costed out per £100 of monthly cover, so purchasers looking for income protection work out their monthly outgoings and calculate how much they need from their policy to meet their financial commitments.  Similarly, mortgage protection covers the monthly mortgage repayments and loan protection meets the monthly cost of any loan commitments.

Policies are now available to everyone as independent PPI provider, British Insurance, recently added products for people in shared ownership schemes and rented accommodation to its range.

Research also shows that 10% of respondents would buy PPI if they felt their job was under threat and people in the finance and business sectors are more likely to have policies, closely followed by those in construction and manufacturing.

Sara-Ann comments: “Don’t wait until your job is under threat to buy a policy – you may be excluded from making a claim if the insurer finds you were under the threat of redundancy at the time of purchase.

”Shop around as High Street providers do not always offer the best deals re; the cover they offer or prices they charge.  Prices for unemployment cover with Independents start at £3.40 per £100 for Income and Loan Protection, and £1.60 per £100 for Mortgage.”

She concludes: “People need to be more aware of the benefits of PPI – those who are unaware of the financial protection it provides could be putting themselves and their families at risk.  In this case, ignorance isn’t bliss.”

Burgesses welcome crackdown on single premium PPI

October 7, 2008 – 4:47 pm

The news that the regulator is set to crackdown on the payment protection insurance (PPI) market is good news for the sector, for the wider financial services industry and most of all, the consumer.

So says Sara-Ann Burgess managing director of protection insurance specialist Burgesses.

“Worldwide crisis in the credit markets and its knock on effect for banking and other financial services has brought it home to many people just how many people in the financial services industry have been treating their customers with contempt.

“Nowhere is this better exemplified that in the PPI market where poor performing products that generate massive commission fees have been pushed to unsuspecting customers.”

Investigations into the PPI market have been ongoing for some time. However, the FSA declared this week it is to escalate intervention following poor findings from its thematic review. It highlighted the sale of single premium PPI sold alongside unsecured personal loans as being of particular concern and advised stopping the practice all together.

Loan protection policies sold by high street providers are up to 12 times more expensive than other more keenly and appropriately priced covers in the market.

“We have been arguing for some time that this product is unsuitable in nearly every scenario and should be scrapped. It is unsurprising that the FSA has now come round to our way of thinking, it is just disappointing that it has taken so long and left customers open to further exploitation by unscrupulous lenders,” Burgess added.

The regulator is also to consider what action to take to deal with ongoing non-compliant sales practices and consider actions to identify and remedy non-compliant past sales, using a range of regulatory powers at its disposal.

Burgess said: “While stricter requirements in selling payment protection insurance would focus attention on the responsibilities that brokers hold to their clients, they must be introduced alongside a tighter line from the FSA over the frightening divergence in price that exists between the cheapest and most expensive products in the market.

“The FSA could regulate the products sold, take a much harder line on those found wanting, or stop credit providers selling only their own protection insurance. This would introduce greater competition and ensure a better deal for the customer.”
